Ever since Congress got together and destroyed the seperation of powers a few weeks ago, I was convinced that I was witnessing the swan song of the NeoCon movement. “Finally they have overreached their grasp,” I thought. “Finally they will reveal themselves to the Jedi the American people for what they really are - a group of people who’s sole driving interest is political gain, and not a culture of life or security, etc.” Because I often say “etc.” to myself.
Now, however, I’m starting to think they may even wiggle out of this one, despite public opinion largely stacked against them in the Schiavo case:
Morton Blackwell, Republican National Committee member from Virginia and a member of ACU’s board, said Republicans are being told support for Mr. DeLay is mandatory if they want future support from conservatives.
“Conservative leaders across the country are working now to make sure that any politician who hopes to have conservative support in the future had better be in the forefront as we attack those who attack Tom DeLay,” he said.
Now that DeLay has taken his party hostage, the midterms aren’t looking as rosy as I had been anticipating.
Consider this - several polls in the last few weeks have not only shown the American people’s disgust with Congress’ legislative action-attack on the sovereignty of the judiciary (which was quarterbacked by DeLay and Bill Frist), but also that they would be less likely to vote for someone who had supported the bill. DeLay is constantly under attack for his ethics violations, and he’s pretty close to ending up in front of a grand jury on criminal charges. Now he has thrown down the gauntlet because oncoming division within the GOP is threatening to derail the GOPGod train in 2006.
What does this all mean? It means, dear reader, that you can fully expect to see ads against both Democrats AND Republicans in the midterms that carry fully-charged megabuster phrases like “Sen. Monsterhead voted to KILL. TERRI. SCHIAVO. He is a murderer and no better than those judicial terrorists! Why would you ever vote for a terrorist, you sick fuck? Why do you hate America?”
I think it is also fair to assume, from an interview with DeLay and O’Reilly last night, that DeLay is concerned about why the judiciary didn’t do what they were told, and will be leading the charge to further wreck our system of government. And of course, his compatriots in the GOP had better grab the party line and yank on it for all they’re worth, or they will have additional ads run against them by the GOP.
The problem with all of this is that the GOP will be able to focus the attention of America on things like this and by beating the public with their version of Christianity, will engender (or in this case, save and preserve) their support among the electorate. With that support will come support for their screeds against an independent judiciary, and the GOP is going to use the correct functionality of our court system in the Schiavo case as justification for the nuclear option.
I don’t think anything will save Bush’s Social Security plan.
Also, be on the lookout for PATRIOT ACT II. Back to PopeWatch.
